Last night my family and I had the honour of sharing in the celebration of our neighbours’ Golden Wedding Anniversary. Gathered around this lovely couple were their family and friends to mark this significant milestone – 50 years of marriage.

Every marriage and relationship has its challenges. As two individuals learn to live together and work towards common goals, of course, there is going to be times for smiles and sometimes, tears. I laugh when my neighbour tells me his secret to a long and happy marriage – “I get up, wash up and then shut up!” What counts in making a happy marriage is not so much how compatiable you are, but how you deal with incompatibility (Leo Tolstoy, 1828-1910).

To all of the couples that I have married, my wish for you all is that you reach this milestone. That you continue to love each other as the years pass, that you grow together rather than apart.
